Organise your own

It can be great fun organising your own fundraising event. Are you a fantastic flautist or can you whip up a wonderful cake? There are many ways that you can raise money for Shelter Cymru.

At Shelter Cymru it costs, on average, £190 to help a person at risk of losing their home or living in poor housing. Everyone deserves to live in a decent and secure home and your support could enable us to help more people and campaign to improve the housing situation in Wales.

Here are some hints and tips to help you on your way but contact the fundraising team and we will help you to make it as successful as possible.

Who to fundraise with

Fundraising is easier if you do it with friends. If you are in school or college, at work or in a community group you are in an ideal position to work with others on your fundraising event. This will make it even bigger and better. Use everybody’s expertise to make your event a success.

How to set up a fundraising event

Choose an event– There are hundreds of events that you could do but if you need inspiration check out our list of fundraising events that you could take part in.

Safety first– We are really grateful that you would like to support us but it is important that your event is safe, if you need a copy of a risk assessment let us know.

Check the dates– Maximise the number of people who will attend by making sure it doesn’t clash with any other events.

Promotion– Speak to the local press and they might be happy to run an article on your event in the local paper. If you are on social media promote your event both in the run up to and after your event as some people will want to donate after it has taken place.

Keep it legal

Raffles– If you want to hold a raffle at your event to raise more money check whether you need a licence, typically if you are only selling tickets during the event and the prizes total less than £500 you won’t need one.

Collections– If you are wanting to hold a collection in a private place like a shopping centre you will need the permission of a manager, if you want to hold a street collection you will need to contact your local authority.

Do not do door-to-door collections as you need a licence to do this.

Selling Alcohol– If you want to sell alcohol you will need a liquor licence from the local authority.

Food Hygiene– Make sure you follow appropriate food hygiene if you are going to be handling or making food at your event.

If you are unsure about whether you need a licence or if there are any laws that you need to follow, contact the fundraising team and we will provide you with as much information as we can.
