Shelter Cymru working with schools
The focus of the Education Service is children and young people. We have established links with many primary and secondary schools as well as colleges in Wales. Our Education Coordinator can provide training on how to deliver lessons and talks on housing and homelessness using our Housemate resources. Contact our Education Officer for more information.
We are very grateful to the many secondary and primary schools across Wales who support us by organising fundraising events. If your school would like to raise money for Shelter Cymru please visit our the Fundraising pages.
Housemate is a package of resources aimed at anyone working with young people in an educational setting or in an information-sharing capacity.
Shelter Cymru received funding from the Welsh Assembly Government to develop its original Housemate for secondary schools resource and the Housemate website. The Education Coordinator consulted in depth with young people and other pack users to gain feedback.
The redeveloped Housemate pack has specific references to the new Personal and Social Education curriculum (implemented from September 2008) and also links into Key Skills, the Welsh Bac and subjects such as Welsh, English, Drama, Citizenship, Geography and RE.
The DVD looks at attitudes and perceptions, a day in the life of a Big Issue vendor, how Shelter Cymru can help and young people’s experiences of homelessness.

Housemate for Primary schools
Sorry – we no longer have copies of the Housemate for Primary schools pack. Shelter Cymru will look to develop an online resource in the near future. Some sections of the Housemate for Secondary schools pack can be adapted for a younger audience.
Housemate for Secondary schools
This pack and series of short films are aimed at pupils aged 11-18 and contain materials with specific references to the Personal and Social Education (PSE) curriculum. The aim of the resources is to raise general awareness of homelessness but also to foster independent living skills and improve financial literacy. Used by teachers, lecturers, youth workers, housing associations, probation officers and organisations working in the field of youth homelessness.
The Housemate website contains information for young people, youth workers and those working in housing and homelessness prevention. It has information on tenancies, budgeting, benefits, where to find accommodation and where to go for advice.
A dedicated Education section provides extra teaching materials and details of local prevention schemes.
Christmas e-card competition
In 2012 Shelter Cymru launched its Christmas e-card competition. We received some fantastic designs; some designed by hand and scanned through to us and others created using digital tools. A pupil from Ysgol Y Waun in Flintshire won the competition and received a framed certificate as well as her design being used as Shelter Cymru’s e-card for 2012 to its partner organisations.
Types of homes
The document below enables teachers to download line drawings on 8 different types of homes a person can live in to encourage discussion around ‘What a Home is’ and ‘What a home means to your pupils’ while giving them the opportunity to get creative with their colouring/arts and crafts.
Other pages in Education
Our young people had a surprise visit from a couple of The Ospreys players who presented their awards for the Tip Top project.
