Youth Participation – Young Person’s Charter for Change on Housing

The Education Service is committed to engaging with young people in matters affecting their lives. In 2010, we have worked with young researchers on a Joseph Rowntree Foundation Charter for Change on Housing. Young people across Wales have carried out research with their peers to see what can be done to help young people on their journey into living independently.

The research is a basis for the Welsh Charter for Change (and summary) and has contributed to a wider UK Charter. Both Charters are being promoted to campaign for real change in young people’s housing options. You can support the Welsh Charter by Signing for Change here!

The Right Track Pack

The Right Track Pack is a Youth Workers guide to Housing and Homelessness. Updated in 2017 the Right Track Pack provides basic information around housing in relation to young people. The pack includes: Housing options; Young people’s rights and responsibilities applying for properties and as tenants; Benefit entitlements including differences for specific groups.

The resources will not make youth workers experts on housing but they will enable them to pass on vital information to young people on gaining and maintaining safe, secure and affordable housing and also what to do if ever faced with homelessness.

We also work with organisations other than schools such as youth clubs and youth services as well as Welsh language initiatives. Our Education Coordinator can provide training on how to deliver lessons and talks on housing and homelessness using our Housemate resources.
